The MSU Spartans men’s basketball program has produced a number of notable players at the professional level. No MSU alumni can match the professional career of Magic Johnson, who played two seasons for the Spartans between 1977 and 1979. Johnson averaged 17 points, 7.6 rebounds, and just under eight assists per game as a Spartan. These statistics would balloon as he transitioned to the NBA, recording career numbers of 19.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and more than 11 assists. Johnson led MSU to a national title in 1979 and later captured five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers.

More recently, the Spartans graduated forward Draymond Green to the NBA. Green broke the Spartans' all-time rebounding record and helped the team win two Big Ten championships. Like Johnson, Green’s contributions and talents only expanded upon reaching the professional stage. As a member of the 2015-2016 Golden State Warriors, Green recorded 13 triple doubles, second only to Russell Westbrook. More importantly, Green played an integral role in the Warrior’s 2015 NBA Finals victory and record-setting 73-win 2015-2016 season. Green has been named Defensive Player of the Year runner up for two consecutive seasons.
