One of the most storied programs in college football history, the Wolverines have no fewer than 11 claimed national championship titles and an additional five unclaimed national titles (mathematical title or indicated by certain sources not recognized by the university). Three Wolverines have been awarded the Heisman Trophy, which goes to the outstanding college football player of the year. Charles Woodson was the most recent player to win the award in 1997, while Desmond Howard received the Heisman in 1991. Tom Harmon received the trophy in 1940 before becoming an air force pilot in World War II and earning a Silver Star and Purple Heart.
